Background
The Hungry Monk Rescue Truck was first deployed in 2017 as a street homeless food outreach truck. Community members expressing food insecurity needs began regularly approaching our team, which quickly led to a pivoting and expansion of our vision into a community response team. The operation’s mission became to respond to the needs of our community –in food insecurity, on the spot medical evaluation, or offering a comfort station during times of need and community events. Two years later, after the death of one of our beloved brothers experiencing street homelessness, Monkworx, the nonprofit, was founded. We felt an urgent need to respond and to provide temporary shelter options for our brothers and sisters experiencing homelessness in our community, and currently provide three bed stabilization programs and an emergency warming center during winter weather.
Founded in 2019, Monkworx Corp is a nonprofit incorporated in the state of New York on a mission to end food and shelter insecurity in QNS.
Mission
The nonprofit Monkworx was founded to address the needs of chronically street homeless individuals throughout New York City. Our mission is to address the needs of this community through the operation of bed stabilization programs, emergency warming centers, and food insecurity operations.
Vision
Our vision in both the HMRT & Monkworx ventures has always been to become a trusted partner of those experiencing homelessness and food insecurity in our community. The sense of urgency which has been driving our mission since day one continues to guide our daily operations, ensuring that all those we bring aboard feel a responsibility to act and respond to the needs of those we serve.
Core Values
Our core value is to treat the individuals we serve with the same dignity and respect we would expect - to meet people where they are at and to serve them patiently, without judgement. We reinforce monastic values in our mission – to instill a sense of responsibility and community in those we serve.
